Developer under fire

FEDERAL Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has lashed out at YTL Land and Development Bhd for snubbing his deputy, Datuk M. Saravanan, whom he tasked with resolving the housing problems of the poor in Sentul.

“What they did is rude,’’ Nong Chik told StarMetro.

Nong Chik was responding to a report in a local daily that YTL preferred to discuss the matter (housing issue) with the FT Minister instead.

“He (Saravanan) has been delegated the job and he has my full support. They (YTL) can come and see me if they want, but to say they no longer want to deal with Saravanan on the matter is disrespectful.

“We are all here to do a job — and that is to serve the people. It is our top priority,” Nong Chik added.

At a meeting with Kg Railway residents on Wednesday, Saravanan said he felt betrayed after the developers of Kampung Railway, Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd (SRSB) sent a message stating that no future proceedings would be conducted with his department with regard to Kampung Railway in Sentul. SRSB is a sister company of YTL.

“I received an SMS stating they would deal only with FT Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin even after I’d stopped a second rally by the Kampung Railway residents because they (developer) agreed to settle matters,” he added.

Saravanan claimed SRSB was buying time to delay the building of the promised low-cost units.

Saravanan said during his meeting with residents in Bandar Baru on Jan 10, the residents had said they would hold monthly protests if the developer did not build the homes.

They had held a protest in December 2009 in front of the YTL office in Jalan Bukit Bintang.

“I cannot stop these people any more. I did it the last time and now they are holding me responsible for it,” Saravanan said.

He also said the problem was not political but concerned the promise made to the poor people 16 years ago when the Sentul Raya developer agreed to build 2,448 low-cost units for the former Keretaapi Tanah Melayu (KTMB) workers.

SRSB took over the project after the original developer, Taiping Consolidated, failed to complete it.

“Our stand is clear: the developer has to build the low-cost units in the Batu area. If they think I am with the people, they should realise the minister is, too,” he added.

During the meeting, residents also questioned SRSB’s failure to meet and discuss the problem with them. They also wanted the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to look into the hygiene problem in the area.

“Rubbish is strewn everywhere while the cement washed out from the factory in the area flows to our homes.

“Our standard of living has dropped drastically. The DBKL came but nothing has happened,” village head Darshan Singh said.

Saravanan, in response, said he would send officers from all relevant departments, including the Health Department, to check on the matter.

“I will also ask them to determine the suitability of a cement factory in Kampung Railway as there are housing areas, schools and a house of worship there,” he added.

The residents also asked the DBKL not to issue the Development Order (DO) for the D7 commercial project until the problem was solved, but Saravanan said he would have to check to make sure such action was not against the law.

RM10m to solve Labuan’s squatter woes - Raja Nong Chik

Raja Nong Chik said RM10 millions needed to solve Labuan’s squatter woes.

LABUAN: A total of RM10mil has been allocated to resolve the squatter problem in Labuan, said Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Datuk Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

He said the allocation was to build low-cost flats over four phases in Kampung Sungai Bangat.

“We still have squatters in Labuan and efforts are in the pipeline to resolve the problem,” he said after launching quarters for civil servants and the extension of the National Land Code to Labuan in Kampung Bukit Kuda here.

Areas with squatters in Labuan include Kampung Rancha-Rancha, Kampung Sungai Bangat, Kampung Muslim and Kampung Kiansam.

Setinggan dan Raja Nong Chik

Masa mula-mula dulu, ramai yg mengatakan Raja Nong Chik baru naik, sebab tu lah rajin turun padang. Alhamdulillah, selepas 100 hari pun, dan dgn berbagai KPI utk dikejar, beliau masih sempat melihat sendiri kedaan hidup rakyat.

Ini penting utk pemimpin supaya mereka tidak lupa diri.

Raja Nong Chik terangkan anggaran kerugian 100 juta ekoran tunjuk perasaan

Semua pun kecoh lah bila Raja Nong Chik anggarkan kerugian mencecah 100-200 juta. Yg pasal org susah nak berniaga, jualan turun, org datang dr jauh semata-mata nak beli persiapan kahwin tapi tk dapat sebab kedai tutup, itu semua para pendemonstran tak peduli. Peduli apa org susah. Bagi PR agaknya, sapa yg tak join demonstrasi mereka bukan rakyat agaknya.

Ini jawapan Raja Nong Chik tentang anggaran 100 juta beliau yg cuba dijadikan isu.

FEDERAL Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin yesterday clarified that his estimate of between RM100 million and RM200 million losses due to Saturday’s anti-ISA demonstration was not merely referring to immediate business losses suffered by the traders and big department stores but also took into consideration the potential drop in the tourist dollar, as well as loss in investments.

Raja Nong Chik told Malay Mail: “I was referring to the overall loss to the country. The demonstration was highlighted all over the world and this would serve to hinder future investments.

“We are trying to promote Malaysia as an investment centre for property and for international companies to set up headquarters here. But many corporations may rather go to Singapore now although it is more expensive because it is safer.

“As it is, tourist arrivals have dropped 50 per cent. This should have been the best time to encourage Middle Eastern tourists to come to Kuala Lumpur in view of the coming month of Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

This will affect the arrivals of not just international tourists but locals as well.

“Of course, immediate business losses on that day alone would not have amounted to that much but probably around RM5 (million) to RM10million,” he said.

As for allegations that many traders would not have had to close shop or incur damage if the police had not used water cannons and tear gas, the FT Minister said: “If they (demonstrators) had not instigated the police or fire department, maybe this would not have happened. I am sure there was some instigation. I am not trying to defend anyone but you cannot just blame one side for it, probably both sides.”

He added that the demonstration would not have been featured internationally had it not been an active demonstration.

“In fact, the government had more to lose by this if it got out of hand and things shown on television were not good, while the Opposition gained a lot of mileage from this coverage,” he said.

As for the exact losses suffered at the affected locations, Raja Nong Chik said he had asked his officers to meet traders to assess damage as well as ask traders to submit their estimated losses.

“Give me a week,” he said.

Apa pun kita sokong raja nong chik sebab kena bgtau sikit bodoh-bodoh ni yg buat kerja tak pikir org lain. Agaknya depa semua org senang makan gaji yg cuti hari Sabtu jadi boleh buat kecoh kat tempat lain.

Kata datuk raja nong chik -- "Kerajaan kita hari ini bukanlah kerajaan yang bersifat 'tahu segalanya' tapi kerajaan yang mendengar suara hati serta rintihan rakyat".

Beliau berkata begitu berikutan DS Najib mengisytiharkan 11 langkah membantu rakyat. 2 darinya berkenaan Wilayah -- penjaja kecil di WP dapat 50% diskaun bagi bayaran lesen dan Penghuni PPR boleh beli rumah yg mereka sewa sekarang.



Baguslah begitu. Kita harap bukan saja ini berterusan tapi langkah-langkah membantu rakyat ditambah dan ditambah lagi. Kita yakin jika keadaan ini berterusan, maka raja nong chik walaupun baru jadi menteri insyaAllah akan diingati rakyat Wilayah Persekutuan sebagai Menteri yang prihatin, rajin turun padang, mesra rakyat dan cekap bekerja.
